Sixty years after Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary first reached the peak of the highest mountain on Earth. I will be offering some facts about the top of the world.
Mount Everest is in Nepal.
Fact No 1:
The officially recognised height of Mount Everest is 29,029ft (8,848m) based on a 1954 ground-based measurement. A disputed satellite based measurement in 1999 suggested it was six feet taller.
Fact No 2:
At Everest’s highest point, you are breathing in a third of the amount of oxygen you would normally breathe due to the atmospheric pressure.
Fact No 3:
There are to two major routes to the summit: the south-east ridge from Nepal and the north ridge from Tibet.
Fact No 4:
At least one person has died on Everest every year since 1969, except in 1977.
Fact No 5:
Winds on the mountain have been recorded at more than 200mph.
